History

Tuebingen is located in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemburg. Baden-Wuerttemburg has been predominantly Protestant since the Reformation. During Napoleon╜s reign, however, areas with predominantly Catholic population were integrated into Baden-Wuerttemburg. In 1812 a Faculty of Catholic Theology (Katholisch-Theologische Fakultaet) was founded in the town of Ellwangen. In 1817 this Faculty was transferred to Tuebingen and became part of the University of Tuebingen.

J.S. Drey, J.A. Moehler, J.B. Hirscher and J.E. Kuhn were the first members of the Catholic Theological Faculty in Tuebingen. They founded the ÒTuebingen Catholic school.╩ This school of Theology continues to exert a creative influence world-wide.

Prominent members of the Faculty of Catholic Theology have included Bishop Karl Josef Hefele (Church History, 1837-39), Karl Adam (Dogmatic Theology, 1919-49), Karl Hermann Schelkle (New Testament, 1950-76), Herbert Haag (Old Testament, 1960-80), Hans Kueng (Dogmatic Theology, 1960-80), Alfons Auer (Theological Ethics,1966-81), and Walter Kasper (Dogmatic Theology, 1970-89), current Bishop of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart.
